Well we are well on our way. We left about 8 this morning after dipping our rear wheels in the Pacific.
We started the day with a climb (brutal at 9% grade). This loosened us up... The road to Corvalis 50 miles away was winding, smooth, hilly, busy and beautiful. Of course we had a head wind most of the day. East of Lebanon we left the busy main highway 20/34 and spent the rest of the day in rural beautiful backroads. We had a brutal climb at the 80 mile mark. The steepest grade was 12%. Then was downhill from that point including getting lost. Even asking didn't help (unusual for guys to do anyway). Our total distance was 105 miles. Terry's Garmin didn't help since the battery died just when we needed it.
I think we are all ready for the big climbing day tomorrow. Weather is to be nice.

You need to charge the batteries before you need it. Thanks for the morning giggle. So excited for you to do this. Keep us updated.
ReplyDeleteGreat job team! Good luck on your climbs tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYou need to use Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. They are the only ones that work all day without issue in my GPS.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear you survived day 1. Best wishes to you all.
Wow - 12% climb on your first day...! And you did over 100 miles,yeah... ...my legs ache just thinking about it... go boys!
ReplyDeleteTerry - Make sure you have the backlight time turned way down. Go to "Menu | System | Display | Backlight Timeout" and set it to a short time. The 800 battery should run for 14-15 hours on a full charge, but it will drop to 8-9 if the backlight settings are too high.
ReplyDeleteTerry - 170 BPM at mile 80.68! I guess that's the 12% grade. That's not terrain that you run into on the Carpenter loop. Enjoy the day today.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen a 12% grade. Maybe a really steep ditch bank. Good going guy's!! Wade
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Dad and all! We love youl!!!! Love, Erin
ReplyDeleteP.S. "Hello" from the ex-coasters of New Zealand. Chris and Rebekah are here and are sad to miss you. Chris says "Have a great trip!"
